Problems uploading in latest browsers

I think a lot of you might have run into this already, but it seems like TiddlySpot has a problem with newer browsers. If you download your site and work on it offline, you will probably find you can no longer upload it back to TiddlySpot. You can however continue to update, ie 'save to web', your TiddlySpot site while using it online. It's only the 'upload' functionality from a local file that's broken.

The reason (I think) is that newer browsers have tightened up the security rules on what is permitted from local files. The restriction prevents UploadPlugin from doing what it used to be able to do. The problem is not specific to TiddlySpot but would effect anyone using UploadPlugin to upload from a local TiddlyWiki to a server.

I'd love to find a work-around or fix for the current UploadPlugin issue. So if you can help with either of these then please let me know.

A fix needed for old sites

If your site was created prior to September 2006, and you've been using the http://tiddlyspot.com/sitename style url since then, you might have a problem updating your site now.

You need to update your upload macro to use the "new" subdomain based urls. Here's how to do it:

Seach for "<<upload http://tiddlyspot" by typing it in your search box (without the quotes)
Edit each tiddler that contains that string and look for this text (except with your site name in place of sitename):

<<upload http://tiddlyspot.com/sitename/store.cgi ... >>

Change it to look like this (once again use your site name in place of sitename)

<<upload http://sitename.tiddlyspot.com/store.cgi ... >>

Click 'done' to update save the tiddlers. Once you've done this you should be able to 'upload' or 'save to web' as before.

Old style urls not working any more

The http://tiddlyspot.com/siteid urls have been deprecated (though working) for a long time. Since a few days ago they have stopped working. I'm planning to setup and test a rewrite that will redirect them, but until that rewrite is in place the old style links are broken. So it's a good idea to update your links and bookmarks to use the new style urls such as http://siteid.tiddlyspot.com/

There is a new directory structure for tiddlyspot sites which should prevent future 'directory too large' problems. However the code that creates sites and operates the control panel doesn't know about the new structure yet. Hence these features are currently disabled until at least tomorrow night. Dreamhost is doing some reorganisation of file servers and because the directory containing all tiddlyspot sites is too big for the file system it's being moved to they decided to tar and gzip it. I think this should be made more obvious than it seems to be at the moment.

Is Tiddlyspot secure?
No. Your password is sent in clear text when uploading and when authenticating to access a private site or your control panel. This means that your Tiddlyspot is vulnerable to packet sniffing and your password could be discovered by a malicious third party. For this reason please don't put sensitive information such as banking details in your Tiddlyspot and don't use the same password that you use for other high security sites.

Tiddlyspot and 2.4.1

The 2.4.1 update to TiddlyWiki breaks Tiddlyspot uploads. So please don't update your Tiddlyspot TiddlyWiki to 2.4.1 until we have a fix for this. The fix is not hard but will take some effort to roll out. It will require an update to UploadPlugin and since Tiddlyspot supports flavours built on older TW cores that are incompatible with the latest UploadPlugin it's not quite as easy as it might be.

Update: Actually it seems like it's only a problem if you have updated UploadPlugin to the latest version from http://tiddlywiki.bidix.info/. If you've stuck with the UploadPlugin that Tiddlyspot created for you then you should be alright to update 2.4.1*

MGTD on Tiddlyspot and UploadPlugin

If you created an MGTD on Tiddlyspot in the last few days you would have had problems uploading/saving to web. This is because an older version of UploadPlugin being installed which has bugs in TW 2.4. To solve this problem you can either delete and recreate your site or update UploadPlugin from http://simontest-mgtdulp41.tiddlyspot.com/#UploadPlugin

All MGTD users on Tiddlyspot have the older UploadPlugin installed. You should also upgrade to the correct version of UploadPlugin. Import UploadPlugin from http://simontest-mgtdulp41.tiddlyspot.com/ using backstage/import. Then save and reload. Apologies for the inconvenience.

Tiddlyspot's host is moving some servers around, and the result will be a 12 hour outage, starting at 04:00 Saturday 22 March, GMT. In California's time zone that's 9pm Friday 21 March; at Tiddlyspot Global Headquarters it will be 2pm Saturday 22 March. If you are expecting to get a lot of work done on your tiddlyspot hosted TiddlyWiki over that time, you will need to download your wiki and save your changes locally until the outage is over. Update: You can find this time in your local timezone.

Backstage not showing

Sites created recently have a problem where the backstage button is not visible while using the site online. If your backstage button isn't showing (it's in the top right corner) then here's how you can fix it. Edit your TspotSetupPlugin tiddler. Add the following:

window.showBackstage = true;

Save to web and reload. You should now see your backstage button. This problem is fixed now for newly created sites.

Outage debriefing

I promised to write a little on our outage earlier this month. In short what happened was that our scripts suddenly stopped working. They would crash when reading a CGI parameter. The @params var in CGI was being set to an empty hash instead of an object with a special [] method (see here under Parameters. We suspect that Dreamhost had perhaps updated something or modified some Apache configuration to cause this sudden change. So I made a little "hello world" test page to attempt to recreate the problem. To my surprise the test page worked fine. After a lengthy period of making the real page successively more identical to the test page while swearing repeatedly I found that removing require 'haml' made the problem go away. Now Haml is a nifty little templating engine that I was using to render our html. (Actually I'd had a conversation with Daniel on the plane just days earlier about how I wanted to stop using Haml since it's benefits were minimal and it was one more place where things could go wrong. So I was right about that). Luckily it wasn't hard to revert back to the plain old html templates that I was using before installing Haml.

In defence of Haml, we were using 1.5 and the latest version was 1.7 at the time (now 1.8). Perhaps the bug (if it is a Haml bug) is fixed in a new release. But at this point I don't care. I still believe Dreamhost must have done some kind of update to something ruby related for this to have suddenly happened like it did, though their (excellent) support team were not able to verify this.

Thanks for the many messages of good-will and support we received via email, twitter and this blog. Surprisingly not a single negative message arrived during the outage. Which perversely makes me want to encourage some negative feedback. Come on guys, we can take it. :)

So what is TiddySpot? It is a free hosting service for TiddlyWiki. Setting up a wiki at TiddlySpot takes just a few seconds and it does not even require a potential user to jump through hoops. TiddlySpot even gives its users a choice on what type of TiddlyWiki they want to set up... A big bonus of using the TiddlySpot service is a user with a hosted TiddlyWiki can save a local copy and work with it offline, then synchronize changes whenever there is an internet service available (cool huh?).

Major Outage

Apologies for the current outage. At present saving online is not working and you can't create new sites. This time we can't easily point the finger at Dreamhost, (even though our code was working fine one day and not the next). For some reason ruby's CGI class has stopped functioning properly and we've yet to find out why. Will let you know as soon as there is some progress. A speedy resolution has been hindered by the fact that I've just gotten back from my Christmas holidays. This is a frustrating time for the Tiddlyspot team. One thing I've noticed is that there are a large number of Tiddlyspot sites about Role Playing Games (RPGs). RPG wikis might be one of the the biggest killer apps for TiddlyWiki that almost no-one has heard of. At least they don't get mentioned much on the TW mailing lists.

Anway here's one I found that uses the "TagglyTagging" features of MonkeyPirateTiddlyWiki (MPTW) so beautifully that I wanted to show it to you. Notice the multi-level contents under Main? It's a just a four column TagglyTagging list in sitemap mode. Click "New Edges" and notice the use of a grouped TagglyTagging list. This site is a pleasure to navigate and really shows off what TagglyTagging can do. Much kudos. Now how about a nice tasteful custom ColorPalette as icing on the cake?

TiddlyFolio is a nice little TiddlyWiki package designed to be a handy place to encrypt and store your bank accounts and credit card numbers. TiddlyFolio could be made into a Tiddlyspot flavour. Let me know there's a demand for this. Personally the thought of putting this kind of sensitive information on Tiddlyspot makes me a little nervous, especially given that we don't have https. Though as long as there is fool proof client-side encryption then it should be okay right?

Previously only selected Tiddlyspot sites were permitted by the proxy. Now you can import tiddlers from any Tiddlyspot site. This should be useful if you have multiple Tiddlyspot sites and you would like to transfer or dynamically fetch content from one to another. It also allows TiddlyChatter to work nicely across Tiddlyspot sites.

Ps, anyone know if IncludePlugin works from one Tiddlyspot site to another via the proxy?

ASciencePad (lack of) support

ASciencePad is a nice TW adaptation featuring a nice WYSIWYG and support for mathematical equations. Unfortunately it's a non-standard TW we can't support it on Tiddlyspot. However I have installed the HTMLArea files and made them available to your site. So if any hackers want to have a go at getting the WYSIWYG to work in a standard TiddlyWiki with HTMLArea then it should work on Tiddlyspot. You can see the HTMLArea files at http://yoursite.tiddlyspot.com/HTMLArea/.

The Tiddlyspot hit counter data came from a particular set of stats files that Dreamhost used to build daily. A few months ago these stopped updating. I asked Dreamhost about it and after some initial confusion they have told me that they aren't going to be updated any more. So the hit counter page is unavailable until I can whip up some replacement scripts to read data from the apache logs. Apologies for the inconvenience.

Sorry I mentioned this on the mailing list ages ago and I should have mentioned it here also. The 2.2 release of TiddlyWiki is available on Tiddlyspot. Actually it's up to 2.2.4 now. If you want to update your existing site then there are many ways you can do it, none of which I will explain here. Sorry. :) If you have to ask then you can't do it. Though if you send Daniel enough emails he might write a Howto. Note that the GTD systems are not tested with 2.2 yet so don't update those unless you know what you're doing. However if MonkeyPirateTiddlyWiki had a box, that box would have a large shiny "2.2 certified" sticker on it.

Another possible ad format for Tiddlyspot

See this example. It has a small text link ad unit in the top right. The good thing about this format is that it doesn't require any javascript hack to position it and is hence more tolerant of variations PageLayout. I think the colour is important though, for instance it would look terrible in that position if it was black on white instead of matching the colour of the SiteTitle panel. Potentially we could let you choose your colour via your control panel or try and guess it by looking at your colour scheme.

Compare to the older example here (a single text ad above search and a banner at the bottom).

Once again we're interested in opinions (positive and negative) on ads on tiddlyspot. If you have any post them in the comments. Note that at present I can't see the point in ads for private (password protected) sites. The reason is that since Google can't spider a private site it won't be able to give ads relevant to the content.

Google Analytics

As of now we are going to be inserting a Google Analytics stat tracker into Tiddlyspot sites. It should go in there the next time you save. Hopefully you won't notice anything different. The tracker code will be stripped out when you download your site. This will give us stats on our traffic and bandwidth and possibly in the future we will be able to use Google Analytics data to provide some more detailed stats on individual sites in your control panel. TiddlyWiki tools for ruby

Maybe that should be ruby tools for TiddlyWiki. As previously mentioned some of the code used in Tiddlyspot (the part that assembles your TiddlyWiki file) is open source. If you know a bit of ruby you can use it for all kinds of TiddlyWiki fun. It's called r4tw and as of last night it supports TW 2.2 files and has some rudimentary RDoc. To use it just download the r4tw.rb file and put it in your current directory.

Here is the code repos. And here is the new RDoc (such as it is). To use it you just need r4tw.rb. You can skip the rest of the files. Some people say I should have just used cook and ginsu. They might be right but r4tw its guaranteed to cook your TiddlyWiki's 15% tastier. Just remember this catch phrase, "r4tw: now you're cooking". Or this other one, "we don't need to steenkin' recipe". ;)

But in seriousness they do have slightly different focii. R4tw considers the TW core (as distinct from the store area) as a black box, while cook can assemble it from separate js files. (Wtf is cook? See here).

Anyway the reason I've been working on this is that I need so that Tiddlyspot can support 2.2 when it arrives. I've tested with the beta and so far so good. I'll probably wait until it's out of beta before making the flavour available and also like I said before I want to test the new 2.2 enhanced UploadPlugin.

Subject says it all really. Ps, I've noticed there's quite a few clever folk have Tiddlyspot sites with the 2.2 beta. So I guess that 2.2 works okay with Tiddlyspot.

Actually I believe BidiX has a new version of UploadPlugin designed especially for 2.2 so I'm aiming to get that going at Tiddlyspot with a 2.2 flavour soon after 2.2 hits the decks and proves to be mostly bug free, and maybe revist BidiX's GroupAuthoring functionality in 2.2. I'd also like to take a closer look at MTS (MiniTiddlyServer) which seems like it can do some very nice tricks with online TiddlyWikis including some multi-user features.

Looking ahead a little further into the future, TW 2.2 has some new built in syncing and server-side magic which I'm hoping will bring about the next generation in the UploadPlugin/MTS family tree. I can't quite imagine what it will look like yet, but it would have the potential to make Tiddlyspot even cooler than it is now. :)

Problem with MonkeyGTD 1.0 flavour (now fixed)

A handful of people in the last couple of days who attempted to create a MonkeyGTD 1.0 flavour Tiddlyspot to do some nice TiddlyWiki powered GTD got 500 Server Errors. This is fixed now. If you are one of those people then please try again now. The half-created sites have been removed so the site ids are available. Thanks very much to the couple of users who reported this problem.

No more core hacks!

I've just done an svn update to the prod area with a bunch of new stuff, albeit mostly behind the scenes:

"Clean" empty files - New sites now use a clean empty TiddlyWiki file. We used to do all kinds of nastly things to the TiddlyWiki core which caused problems when it came time to upgrade your TiddlyWiki. Now all new sites are clean and pristine TiddlyWikis. Hurrah!
Site id now just in one place - It will be much easier to move your Tiddlyspot TiddlyWiki from one site id to another and much easier to take an existing TiddlyWiki and use it with Tiddlyspot because the site id is only specified in one place. You don't have to dig through 10 different places to modify it. And the "Uploading an existing TiddlyWiki" faq should get much shorter.
Simplified config - All the Tiddlyspot related configuration is in one place now, TspotSetupPlugin.
d3 autosave switched off - This should prevent annoying popups for new d3 users.
MPTW "naked" flavour available - A new version of MPTW is available that doesn't include the MPTW theme, in case you prefer a standard layout or you want to install a theme from http://tiddlythemes.com/

We also have a new system for managing flavours and empties one or two minor bug fixes and tweaks. There are some big changes in there so there could be bugs. Please let us know at feedback@tiddlyspot.com.

An update from Norton has been killing TiddlyWiki files. All TiddlyWikis are incorrectly indentified as having W32.Feebs, not just those from Tiddlyspot. See this thread for more information.

Someone said they were able to restore their TW from the quarantine files area, even though Norton told him that it had deleted the file. So if you had local unsaved modifications you might be able to recover them.

I believe they quickly released another update that has fixed the problem but for many users the damage was done and for some it has been devastating. This is a terrible mistake from Norton. Our sympathy to those affected. I hope that your data is safe. And please take this as a reminder to always make secure backups of all your important stuff.

No, just kidding. Starting about 15 minutes ago, authentication stopped working. So control panels are inaccessible, and if you have a password-protected site, that's inaccessible too.

Sorry about this. Your data is still safe, just slightly more secure that you want it to be. So please hang tight while we sort it out with the hosting people.

You can now delete your own site

There is now an option to delete your own site in your control panel. Hooray! 50% of our support requests are "Please delete my site, I [don't need it/want to create it again]", so this will cut down the support workload considerably I hope.

49% are "I forgot my password" so that will be the next thing to address. The best ways to provide a "forgot password" page involve collecting an email address for each site, so there are some issues there since we currently don't do that.

MonkeyGTD 2.1 alpha flavour now available

Presentation mode TiddlyWiki now available

Presentation TiddlyWiki (which is what I will call it until a better name comes along) is a new TiddlyWiki distribution created by Saq Imtiaz. Check it out here. The point of this TiddlyWiki package is so you can create a web site with all of the power of TiddlyWiki for authoring but still won't confuse or scare your average joe web users. In fact your web users will see something that looks like a pretty "normal" web site. Take a look at the example, which happens to be a real-life university assignment, in user mode and in author mode to get an idea how it works.

So now to get this blog a little more on topic... The above comes from a little project I started to fix up the code that assembles a TiddlyWiki site when you create it. The starting point is this stuff which I use to developing/release MPTW and MonkeyGTD. Hopefully this will turn into a nice set of ruby classes for manipulating TiddlyWiki files, (and maybe even a substitute for cook and ginsu) that I can release as open source and use in Tiddlyspot.

For this work I have installed Eclipse and RDT and I'm using unit testing (and svn if I ever get the subclipse plugin working). Anyway it's pretty cool so far though I am missing my vim.
